As a wedding photographer I am thrilled when couples feel comfortable enough to ask me questions in order to better understand what kind of client experience I provide. Over the years, I have found that many couples either do not know what kind of questions to ask, or they may have a list of questions that an editor has put together in a a blog or magazine. As a wedding photographer myself, I have been around hundreds of wedding industry vendors, and there are a few professionals that shine among the rest. I have put together this list of great questions to ask you potential wedding photographer to see if they will truly shine on your wedding day.

WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL APPROACH TO A WEDDING DAY? This question should allow the photographer to express what kind of experience they have curated for their clients and should also give you insight into what drives this photographer mentally and creatively on the day of a wedding. Is he/she primarily motivated get the best photographs possible no matter what stands in the way, or primarily motived by providing the best client/guest experience while capturing images in a way that isn’t intrusive to guests? Does he/she value having input on the timeline and discussing details with your wedding planner? Or is the approach just to show up and photograph whatever has been put together? What happens to be his/her favorite thing to shoot on a wedding day? Is there an emphasis on wedding details as well as portraits, or is there a more photojournalism and editorial approach (or all of the above)? Once a client books how accessible is the photographer to the clients during the wedding planning process? There can a huge difference between one photographer’s approach to a wedding and another photographer’s approach, which can also mean a huge difference in client experience. This is a great question because it opens up great dialogue and gives the photographer the opportunity to explain what he/she would bring to your wedding day!

WHAT TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPHY COLLECTIONS DO YOU OFFER? Photography collections can vary greatly depending on each photographer. Most photographers will be able to send you a wedding photography collection price sheet that includes details of all services and goods offered. Some base their collections on hours of coverage, others charge an all day rate with add on options. A great thing to ask is whether or not sales tax is applicable, and if so is it included in the photography collection pricing or not? Are printing rights included, or is this an additional fee? If you are curious about a non-disclosure agreement that is definitely something to inquire about early on as well. Do any of the collections include prints, an album, or an engagement session? What about rehearsal dinner coverage, or a boudoir session? How many (if any) photographers/assistants do you prefer to have when documenting a wedding? Do you offer any custom photography collections/packages? Try writing down any and all photography services you think you may be interested in when it comes to your wedding, and get quotes on all those services if desired.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT WORKING CLOSELY WITH OTHER WEDDING VENDORS? This is something that can be easily overlooked, and yet make a huge impact on your experience during your wedding day! Many times photographers are required to work closely with planners, videographers, officiants and venue managers. It is incredibly important to have a photographer that is a team player, courteous to others, and at the same time skilled at creating beautiful imagery on your wedding day. Videography is an important part of preserving memories. Some photographers work well with them, others find them intrusive. If you want both a photographer and a videographer (which I highly recommend) make sure your photographer is aware and happy.
